About Paul Anthony

While Paul Anthony was a candidate for a degree in architecture, he decided to satisfy an elective requirement by signing up for a ceramics class. It seemed to him like a good and creative change of pace, nothing more. That is until he watched a mound of clay on the potter's wheel evolve into an elegant and useful vessel–a pot to most–but magic to him. He's been throwing ever since.

Paul's architectural training and years of professional practice strongly influence his design decisions. Form follows function in his work–it's meant to be used not just admired. And he goes a step further than most with his hope that using his ceramic pieces not only enriches the user but also the purpose for which the piece was designed.

"I have moved a "mountain" of clay since that first pot," he says, "and it's still magic. Do you see it?"

The Studio

In a time when hand made is almost unknown because of international mass production, the studio ceramic artist is a vanishing breed. The studio of Anthony Stoneware is aptly named "SOLSTITIUM" where the sun stands still.

Anthony Stoneware is an American pottery founded in 1966, with the vision & passion to produce functional ceramic ware of high material integrity, excellent design and pleasing aesthetic.

Each piece is handcrafted on the potter's wheel or constructed from clay slabs using techniques that have been developed in the studio since 1966. All ware is fired to 2400 degrees Farenheit to create a very durable, vitreous product that will not decay, fade or breakdown in UV light.

In 1981, the Chickadee Feeder was introduced to Anthony Stoneware's national network of craft galleries. This small pot was so well received that they designed a collection of six houses and feeders around it. In 2001, the "For the Birds Collection" was presented to the Birding Industry. In 2002, they introduced seven new items. The response remains enthusiastic and affirming.

The For the Birds Collection pieces are beautifully crafted, functional ornaments designed to bring the lively activity and color of birds into the garden and our lives.

The "For the Birds Collection" has been very well received at the Atlanta "BIRDWATCH AMERICA" marketplace, which services WILD BIRD CENTERS, WILD BIRDS UNLIMITED, many independent birding & nature retailers as well as garden centers from the Florida Keys to Anchorage, Alaska.

The Bird in Flight collection consists of seven items for use in enjoying wild birds in one's own environment. The wonderful sight of a bird soaring into the sky, flying overhead or landing nearby catches the imagination and wonder of everyone. The Dove of Peace, with an olive branch in its beak, is probably the most common image of a bird in flight.

The potters at Anthony Stoneware design, mold and build their pieces for their own enjoyment in the creation, the owner's enjoyment in the beauty and nature's enjoyment of something man-made that is symbiotic with nature itself. They create magic everyday and want to share it with you.
