Earthenware — ceramics
A low‒fire clay. Porous and not waterproof. To be functional, it needs to be glazed.
Electroplated — handcrafted jewelry, metal
Coated with a thin layer of (usually precious such as gold or silver) metal by passing an electric current through
a chemical solution containing a source of the metal.
Enameled Glass — art glass, handblown glass
Opaque glass colors melted onto glass surface. The colors are actually glass powder.
F
Filigrana — art glass, handblown glass
Generic name for glass decorated internally with patterns created from fine, pre‒formed canes. The canes are usually
made of lattimo or colored glass.
Firing — ceramics
Clay is hardened by heating it to a high temperature, fusing the clay particles. Primitive pottery
is usually fired on the ground or in pits with whatever flammable material is available. Kilns
allow a more efficient use of materials and more control over the atmosphere during a firing. The
two basic atmospheres, oxidation and reduction, affect the color of the final piece.
Fire polishing — art glass, handblown glass
The warm glass technique of heating glass just enough to round the edges and give it a shiny appearance. Glass
temperature is usually between 1300 to 1400 degrees Fahrenheit
Frit — art glass, handblown glass
Frit is a way of adding color and texture effects to the surface of the glass. It is small chunks of glass, usually
colored, although clear can be used, which are usually laid out on a marver and the well heated piece is rolled in them.
The color may be given an arrangement, checkerboard, etc., or just be a scattering of pieces. Frit
can be bought in various sizes from sources of glass color or crushed from rods of glass.
Full Fusing — art glass, handblown glass
The warm glass technique of joining two or more pieces of glass by heating until they flow together. Glass temperature
is usually between 1450 and 1550 degrees Fahrenheit.
Fused, Fusing — art glass, handblown glass
Part of the warm glass category. Glass fusing, is simply the process of using a kiln to join together pieces of glass.
